Daiwei Lu (b. 1996, Wuhan, China) first became interested in composition through arranging video game music during his high school years. He is currently an Assistant Professor at Tokyo College of Music, a member of the Society for Research in Asiatic Music, and an affiliated composer of the composers' collective Tokyo Duck.
In 2019, he graduated summa cum laude from Boston Conservatory at Berklee with a Bachelor of Music degree, studying composition with Eun Young Lee, Curtis Hughes, and Felipe Lara, and piano with Carlos Vargas. In 2022, he completed his Master of Music degree in Composition at Tokyo College of Music, where he studied with Toshio Hosokawa. In 2026, he earned his doctorate in Music from the same institution and received the Doctoral Program Committee Award for Excellence. During his doctoral studies, he studied with Ichiro Nodaira, Keiko Harada, and Sumihisa Arima, while also pursuing interdisciplinary research in ethnomusicology.
Since the early 2020s, his music has explored concepts such as "multicultural music," "otherness," "musical symbolism." His work reflects an interest in the cultural interplay of contemporary East Asian urban life, as well as the transformation and reconstruction of musical materials and cultural symbols across different contexts. He also explores unstable musical structures and the experience of time, drawing connections to the complex and shifting identities of contemporary life. In his compositions, he emphasizes the relationships between musical materials, timbre, instrumentation, and structure, while continuing to explore the expressive possibilities of traditional instruments from East Asia, and other non-Western musical traditions. His works encompass solo, chamber, and orchestral music, as well as jazz, game music.
Based in Tokyo, Lu is actively engaged in international musical activities. His works have been performed in 20 countries across Asia, Europe, North America, and South America, including China, Japan, the United States, Spain, Brazil, Israel, Russia, Thailand, and Ukraine. He has collaborated with ensembles such as Trio Arbos, Hong Kong New Music Ensemble, Ensemble Court Circuit, Quatuor Diotima, Ensemble l'Itinéraire, and AsianArt Ensemble. Several of his compositions have been selected as required repertoire for international performance competitions, including Mongeumpo-Taryeon for the 2019 Sejong Music Competition and Echoes of Memory for the 2nd Sound Way International Piano Competition.
In 2019, he served as Composer-in-Residence at the ICon Arts Festival in Sibiu, Romania. His doctoral dissertation, A Comparative Study of Contemporary Composition of Japanese Biwa and Chinese Pipa, examines compositional techniques and their cultural contexts in contemporary Japanese and Chinese biwa and pipa music.
Outside music, he enjoys video games and traveling, especially to places that rarely appear in travel guidebooks.
